Conceptualisation of Space is a 3 year programme, based on art practices that combine theatre, film, video, architecture and fine art. Students are encouraged to take full control of the visual aspects of production using a variety of modes of communication – for example drawing, computer imaging, scale models – in a range of professional contexts. The course considers a combination of new theories and technologies as well as well established practices, such as: objective drawing and modelling, making of storyboards, scale models, technical plans, and digital imaging. The course is suitable for all those who wish to develop their confidence, skills and knowledge in the use of space and the action within it. It is aimed at students who may wish to work in film/video directing and design, theatre design and directing, TV design, puppet design, fabrication and directing, prop making, animation, film / video, and the art of performance.

Course of study

Through individual project work, which is the basis of the first year of the advanced course, students become acquainted with principal elements and methodologies of design for conceptualising and creating space for film, TV and theatre performance. During the course of the following two years students are offered opportunities and challenged to work both from project briefs and on self-directed work. Students can choose their own course of creative development in film design and directing, theatre scenography and directing: TV set design, costume design, 2d or 3d animation, film, video, performance art and puppet design, fabrication and directing, animation.

Entry Requirements

The standard minimum entry requirements for this course are:

a) secondary school exit exam (maturity exam) – 2 A Levels
b) who has passed the professional secondary school exit exam in any secondary school programme and the exam of one of the maturitic subjects (philosophy, art theory, contemporary dance, art history, sociology, theory and history of drama and theatre). The chosen subject should not be the mandatory subject of the candidate’s qualification at tht professional exit exam.
c) who completed any four-year secondary education programme before 1.6.1995,
d) or equivalent EU/International qualifications, such as International Baccalaureate Diploma.

APEL (Approval of Prior Experiential Learning)

Applicants who do not meet these course entry requirements a), b), c) or d) may still be considered in exceptional cases. The course team will consider each application that demonstrates additional strengths and alternative evidence.

This interdisciplinary 3 year study of Fine Art encourages a flexible approach to Fine Art practice. The course welcomes the challenge of the fast-changing cultural and social environment of today’s post-industrial era. The focus of the Fine Art programme is to provide its students with a solid foundation in the visual arts and to build a broad-based experience of Fine Art study with an emphasis on idea/concept development.

Research into many possible approaches of visual disciplines is promoted, such as: painting, sculpture, installation, photo media, digital imaging, video/film, performance art. From the vast field of Fine Art practice students can choose their preferred media or method to facilitate realisation of their ideas and creative goals. The aim of the course is to develop the creative potential of our students through a balance of practical work and research. The AVA programme is suitable for open-minded students willing to consider a range of media and practices – from painting, sculpting, installation, performance art, to film and video. The course fuses new theories and technologies and well established practices, such as: objective drawing, painting, modelling, photography, film, video, installation, performance art, digital imaging.

Course of study

The first year offers a wide ranging introduction of disciplines associated with Fine Art practice: painting, drawing, modelling, photography, digital imaging video and film. Through the course of the following two years, students are presented with more possibilities for their developing individual approach to given or chosen themes. Students can follow their own inclinations and pursue ideas in relation to set projects. The school encourages students to work with an interdisciplinary approach to film, video, installation, and the combining of 2D and 3D in both real and virtual contexts.

Introduction

Commonalities and differences of Fine Art practices are introduced. The course aims to develop a vast spectrum of approaches, processes and methods of realising art work. It also enables students to combine different art practices in the context of a project.

VISUAL ARTS: CONTEMPORARY VISUAL PRACTICES 

Fundamental aims of the programme

Postgraduate Visual Arts programme: contemporary visual practices combine an interdisciplinary and intertextual teaching system that equips students with advanced knowledge in the field of visual arts and theory. The postgraduate study programme is oriented in a way that reflects the challenges, needs and requirements of the time in which we live. A corpus of knowledge and behaviour acquired by a postgraduate student within the framework of the study program at the AVA- Academy of Visual Arts  provides the highest level of professionalism and professionalisation in the field of study, which represents the key to the establishment of a professional career. The study programme ensures acquisition of advanced elements of art as well as the most advanced artistic practices. In addition to the practical skills acquired by a postgraduate student, the study program includes the acquisition of advanced theoretical instruments, which complements their own artistic practice. A set of practical and theoretical knowledge in the field of visual arts is a study programme that is not only innovative in terms of simultaneous interaction between practice and theory, but also unique in the Slovenian educational system in the field of art.
Mastering all the basic elements that form a postgraduate study programme Visual arts: modern visual practices and theory ensures that the student after a master’s thesis is professionally trained both in the field of practice and in the field of theory, which enables him to work independently as well as the continuation of the study and research paths at phD level.

The basic objectives of the study program are:

  • ability to develop an independent artistic career,
  • ability to engage in the professional working environment of the arts and cultural industries,
  • interdisciplinary and intertextual thinking and action,
  • a comprehensive conceptual project and production process in the practical and theoretical field,
  • the rationale of their own research and working paradigms,

  • capable of advanced applications and understanding of the most demanding procedures,

  • professional development and implementation of the exhibition/event/presentation or thesis at the highest level

  • the ability of high professional and professional approaches to the practices of visual arts and other practices in the cultural industry,

  • advanced knowledge of the simultaneous interaction between artistic practice and theory and a comprehensive conceptual production process in the practical and theoretical field,
  • is capable of project planning and independent work and research in the artistic and theoretical field,
  • advanced knowledge in the field of material and media knowledge, project design and work, and working practices and procedures,
  • capable of preparing appropriate methodology of work and research within an artistic/research project,
  •  advanced understanding of the artistic system, the cultural and creative industries in the local, national and international space,
  • professional competence for solving specific artistic and scientific/research problems in the field of visual arts and theory,

  • advanced knowledge of the connection between professional and personal development and the preparation of appropriate research and analysis of the professional context,
